The Work Continues
Monday
Finally did something other than soccer for Pday today. We got permission from the APs to go to the zoo, which is in the Lima Central mission I think. We went with the other Elders and it was way fun. The trip included seeing other missionaries, llamas spitting at us, finding animals that I literally thought were extinct or didn't know existed, and overall it was a party. Afterwards, we went to a nearby Chili's, which is the closest to home I think I'm ever gonna get. Eating a really good hamburger while Guns and Roses was playing in the background got me a wee bit emotional just thinking about America.
Wednesday
Kind of an interesting day. I'm not sure why, but so many of our lessons fell through, so a lot of the day was just wandering and replanning. But for about every lesson that fell through, we found a new person. One of the new people we found is living with the patriarch, is reading the Book of Mormon, and has already gone to church twice but isn't even a member (for now)! We had a lesson with Luis and also met his dad for the first time. The lesson was on the Restoration, and I think it went really well. It was also Elder Estela's one-year anniversary as a missionary. He decided to burn his shirt inside the house, which I wasn't ready for, and he also extinguished the flame in a very interesting way haha. We quickly learned that our smoke alarm doesn't work because holy cow, was it stuffy. Fun night though.
Thursday
Zone conference part 4, baby! As we were waiting to cross the street to get there, we saw this crazy Peruvian bro running and yelling directly at us. Pretty spooky, but we just ignored it, and he went his way. Really good Zone Conference (although I'm always gonna think that they're a little too long). My biggest takeaway is not to focus on what you couldn't do in the past, but always look forward and treat every day as the best day of your mission. After Zone Conference, we had a lesson with Angie's family, including her boyfriend, Christian, and his daughter. We invited them to be baptized, and he said that God is in his heart or whatever, but then Angie pulled up and said that he's going to change his mind just like she did. It was pretty awesome. We ended the day with the Miranda family before calling it a night.
Friday
Tough day. Lots of lessons falling through and even more rejections. We got to the last lesson of the day without finding anybody. That last lesson was with Luis, who lives in the top of our area, and we live close to the bottom, so Elder Estela, being the way that he is, wanted to hit our finding goal all on our walk back down. When we walked past a group of people our age, he told me in English, "Use your power" (my power being that they'd want to talk to me because I'm twice as tall as them and a shade of color they've never seen before in person). We found them, and with that momentum, we talked to literally everyone and made it to our house, finding 6 people in our 30-minute walk.
Saturday
Not a very exciting day. Most of it was just spent finding inactive members, and we found quite a few cool people from it. In between, me and Elder Estela were exchanging life lore, and he's super fun to talk to. His Spanish is pretty fast, so it's good for me to practice with him. Other than that, it was a simple day.
Sunday
Unfortunately, we didn't have a ton of people pull up to church, just Leonor and Luis. Then, for the first time in forever, we ate at the house with 7 dogs in it that smells like dog pee. I've gone there almost every Sunday for 5 months, but when we left, Elder Estela told me in broken English, "I'm never going here again." Pretty funny. Another day with visiting members. We also met with Leonor and John, but the lesson ended up being more focused on John. He says he feels like he doesn't have a lot of faith but is praying, reading the scriptures, going to church, went to the temple—all only in a few months of knowing us and being baptized. Bro has more faith than anyone I know. It was a good lesson though.
Thanks for tuning in. I hope all of y'all have a great week. Say your scriptures, read your prayers. Until next time! Peace out.
