Oh Wait? You Said That I'M The Zone Leader?!
Buenos días amigos!
We're starting day 4 of the real MTC and it's something to get used to for sure. The rooms we're staying in are like half as big as the dorm room I stayed at for Snow, but with 6 of us instead of 2, it's very tight. The schedule is the exact same as home MTC but with scheduled times for meals. The food here isn't that great, but it's only going to get worse from here when I get to Peru, so maybe it's a good transition. Classes haven't been anything special; it's just review over preach my gospel lessons and some roleplays. Sometimes I feel like I'm too nice when giving feedback on the roleplays because whenever I'm given feedback, there's always a lot that they have to say. The classes are 3 hours too, so by the end of each of them, I'm fighting to stay awake, especially since I'm not used to the schedule. During the meal times, I've been finding a lot of people I know and that's been a lot of fun seeing them. I've also found two people going to the same mission as me during those times, so it's been way fun meeting those people too. It seems like all of them are also very worried about getting their visas like I am, so I found some comfort that I'm not the only one.
This week is especially cool though because the apostles are roaming around campus to give the mission presidents their training. Yesterday we were walking to a meeting with our branch president when this security guard yelled at us to get on the grass. Then a car started driving on the sidewalk until it stopped right behind us. Dallin H. Oaks walked out with his wife and we watched him get escorted to the building and I swear he looked at me and waved! It was so cool! Then we continued to go to the meeting with our branch president when we casually walked past Garrett W. Gong with no security guard, escort, or anything. He was just talking to some people. It was wild!
Anyways, we went to the meeting with our branch president and it was our first time meeting him. No one knew what the meeting was about and we thought it'd just be introductions. We did introduce ourselves for like the first hour but then the branch and mission president said that they'd be doing individual companion interviews with each of us. We were all confused but then looked at the agenda and realized that they'd be choosing the district and zone leaders. So they pulled us one companionship at a time for interviews and me and Elder Holden were one of the last people. I thought that the district leader would either be Elder McIntyre from our district or my comp Elder Holden. We were interviewed by our mission president and he immediately told us that our entire district was one of the most capable districts he's met with. He asked us why we're serving our mission and what our relationship was like with the Savior. I told him a lot of the same things I said in my farewell talk for those questions. He also asked us who we thought would be capable of being district leader and we told him our thoughts. Then he led us out and we just waited in the meeting room discussing our missionary purpose while the mission and branch leaders discussed their thoughts. They came back and asked for me and Elder Holden, another comp of elders from our district, a comp of sisters in our district, and a comp of elders from the other district to come meet with them. He explained that the other comp of elders in our district would be district leaders, meaning that me and Elder Holden would be zone leaders by default, and I was sure it was Elder Holden. When the mission president talked to us about being zone leaders, he said that Holden would be the senior comp and I had no idea what that meant. I assumed that it meant he was the zone leader because in my mind, the senior comp meant the better one. I told him congrats and gave him a hug because I was stoked about it for him, but I quickly got confused because everyone was saying congrats to me. When they announced the leadership positions to everyone else, they only announced that we were both zone leaders and didn't specify which of us was actually chosen. Still thinking Elder Holden was zone leader, we had a meeting with the mission president right after and he handed me a folder with everything we needed and I just automatically handed it to Elder Holden. He was very confused and when our mission president started talking, Holden handed the folder back to me to look at it and that's when I finally realized, "Oh wait! I'M the zone leader!" It was so funny I had no idea, but I'm excited for it. I don't even know what zone leader means, but I'll try my best. So there's my funny story for the week.
TLDR: I had an apostle wave to me and was appointed zone leader without realizing it.
Also read 3 Nephi 11, it's probably one of the best chapters in the entire Book of Mormon. Peace out, love y'all!
